Linking to your internal pages increases a site ranking and it is a way of boosting SEO process.  In most cases, search engine spiders do not crawl deep inside your pages and by linking to your older blog posts, you are basically giving a new life to those posts so that search engines will not forget them.

To have an effective internal link building strategy, here is a few tips on SEO best practice on internal linking that you could follow;

  • Use related anchor hyperlink text when linking within your posts.

  • Use a keyword in your anchor text (hyperlinks) whenever possible.

  • Have related posts and popular posts links on your homepage.

  • Have all external links and side bar links open to a new window.

  • Avoiding linking non related pages to your homepage. This includes pages that do not have any keywords in them and are not part of what your readers are looking for in search engine. This help in preserving the page ranking for your home page.

  • Build links only on pages that are related with each other by a keyword.

  • Use rel="nofollow"  attribute to all internal and external links that you do not want to be crawled by spiders.
